A Shift Toward Tactile Control
After receiving extensive feedback regarding the lack of physical controls in its previous models, Rivian has decided to integrate a more tactile user interface in the upcoming 2027 R2. The vehicle will feature two haptic 'halo' wheels built directly into the steering wheel, allowing drivers to manage essential settings like volume and climate control without needing to navigate through touchscreen menus.
According to Jeff Hammoud, Rivian’s Chief Design Officer, the decision was a direct response to customer preferences. «You're never going to make everyone happy. People wanting physical controls,» Hammoud noted during a recent event. While the company’s earlier vehicles, the R1S and R1T, leaned heavily into a button-less, tech-forward aesthetic favored by CEO R.J. Scaringe, the R2 signals a strategic adjustment.
The Functionality of Halo Wheels
The new halo wheels are designed to offer a middle ground between minimalist design and traditional usability. These controls support scrolling, pushing, pulling, and tilting, providing distinct haptic feedback for each interaction. This allows drivers to keep their attention on the road while receiving confirmation of their inputs on the digital dashboard.
«Now you can adjust the fan speed without actually taking your hands off the wheel,» explained Hammoud. While basic adjustments can still be managed via the center touchscreen—which remains colorful and intuitive—these new steering wheel controls offer a more ergonomic and safer way to handle frequent tasks while driving.
Software-Defined Flexibility
Unlike traditional mechanical buttons, the halo wheels are software-supported. Michael Hong, Senior Director of Electrical Architecture at Rivian, highlighted that this design allows the company to update or reassign functions via over-the-air software flashes. This approach aligns with the industry's shift toward 'software-defined vehicles,' where hardware can evolve alongside user needs.
Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s Chief Software Officer, emphasized that the goal was to innovate rather than simply regress to old-school buttons. «We wanted to do something novel. We did get the feedback from customers that they wanted tactile control,» Bensaid stated. This solution is being marketed as a quintessentially 'Rivian' approach—blending modern technology with practical utility.
Maintaining the Brand Identity
Rivian continues to differentiate itself in the EV market by balancing high-tech innovation with a sense of playfulness. Beyond the technical advancements, the R2 retains the company’s signature 'Easter eggs,' such as themed graphics hidden throughout the vehicle, which the design team jokingly refers to as 'dad jokes.'
Ultimately, the R2 represents a mature step for the brand. While the haptic halo wheels may require a brief learning curve for some users, they provide a tangible improvement in vehicle operation, proving that Rivian is listening to its drivers while maintaining its unique identity in an increasingly competitive landscape.
