Origins Beyond the Asphalt
While BMW is globally recognized today for high-end automotive engineering, its roots were not originally tied to cars or motorcycles. The company’s foundations were laid in the early 20th century through the efforts of Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto. Otto established an aircraft factory in Munich in 1911, while Rapp founded Rapp-Motorenwerke in 1913, focusing on aviation engines. These two enterprises eventually merged, leading to the official founding of BMW on March 7, 1916. Even the famous blue and white logo, adopted in 1917, was intended to evoke the image of a spinning propeller against the Bavarian sky.
The Pivot to Two Wheels
Following World War I and the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Germany faced strict limitations on manufacturing, which included a total ban on the production of aircraft and aviation engines. Forced to adapt to survive, the company shifted its focus toward utility motors for boats, trucks, and agricultural equipment. This transition paved the way for BMW to enter the motorcycle market. In 1923, the brand debuted its first motorcycle at the Berlin Motor Show, a turning point driven by engineer Max Friz.
Interestingly, Friz was initially resistant to the idea of building motorcycles, as he viewed anything other than aircraft as inefficient. However, under pressure from company management, he applied his aeronautical expertise to ground-based transport.
The Innovative R32: A Technical Milestone
In 1922, Friz designed the R32, a machine that would set the tone for future BMW engineering. The bike featured a 486cc four-stroke "Boxer" twin-cylinder engine. Several design choices stood out at the time:
- Transverse Mounting: By placing the cylinder heads sideways, Friz ensured natural air-cooling and allowed for a more compact wheelbase.
- Shaft Drive: This system replaced traditional chains or belts, providing a more reliable and easier-to-maintain power transfer to the rear wheel.
- Advanced Lubrication: The R32 utilized a recirculating wet sump system, a significant upgrade over the common "total-loss" oiling methods of the era.
The R32 became an instant success, producing 8.5 horsepower and reaching speeds of nearly 60 mph. Between 1923 and 1926, the company sold roughly 3,000 units, including exports to Japan and specialized versions for municipal use.
A Legacy of Performance
The design philosophy introduced by Friz proved remarkably resilient. Following the R32, the R37 model was introduced with a light alloy cylinder head that pushed output to 16 horsepower. This machine dominated the racing world, with BMW riders winning every German 500cc Championship between 1924 and 1929.
The core elements of Friz’s design—specifically the transverse "Boxer" engine and the cardan shaft drive—remained central to BMW motorcycles for decades. In fact, as noted by historians, the underlying engineering principles of that initial design remained in production cycles until the late 20th century. As the company famously stated, the longevity of these innovations stands as a testament to their original vision: «The transverse-mounted cylinders and cardan shaft drive proved so successful that both are still in use today.»
