Long before modern turbocharged four-cylinder engines became the standard for Ford's entry-level vehicles, the Ford Thriftpower inline-six was the primary workhorse for the brand. Debuting in 1960 for the compact Falcon, this cast-iron engine underwent numerous displacements and design iterations over its 24-year lifespan. It powered a diverse range of vehicles, from the sporty Mustang to the iconic original Maverick, eventually retiring in 1983 with the Ford Fairmont, LTD, and their Mercury counterparts, the Zephyr and Marquis.
Evolution and Technical Refinements
The engine family debuted with a modest 144-cubic-inch displacement. By 1961, Ford introduced the 170-cubic-inch Special Six, which became an option for the Falcon and Comet. Early Mustangs utilized this 170 unit before it was superseded in 1963 by the more advanced 200-cubic-inch version. This updated iteration featured significant internal upgrades, including:
- A redesigned bottom end equipped with seven main bearings.
- A reinforced, thicker block deck.
- The integration of hydraulic lifters for improved refinement.
These enhancements resulted in a powerplant that was notably quieter and smoother than its predecessors. The 200-cubic-inch engine became a staple for vehicles like the Granada and even returned to the Fox-body Mustang between 1979 and 1982 to address supply shortages of German-imported Cologne V6 engines.

Beyond passenger cars, the Thriftpower inline-six was essential to the early development of the Ford Bronco. Today, the engine is celebrated by enthusiasts for its exceptional durability, with many units surviving for hundreds of thousands of miles on factory-original internals.
While originally designed for economy, modern performance builders have recognized the hidden potential of these engines. As noted in industry circles, the seven-main-bearing 200-cubic-inch block is considered a superior foundation for modifications. Enthusiasts have successfully paired these engines with turbochargers and modern fuel injection systems to achieve power outputs that rival much more modern performance engines.
