Minor Aesthetic Refresh
As the second-generation Toyota GR86 enters its fifth year on the market, the manufacturer has opted for consistency rather than a complete visual overhaul. The vehicle retains its familiar silhouette, with the only notable exterior update being the introduction of a new "Thunder" solid gray paint option.
Inside the cabin, the Premium trim has received a refined look, featuring a cast-iron-black finish applied to knobs, switches, and the shifter assembly. Furthermore, a new "Cockpit Red" interior theme is available, combining black Ultrasuede seating surfaces with striking red leather bolsters, complemented by matching accents on the floor mats and door panels.
Safety System Enhancements
Toyota has bolstered the GR86's safety technology suite by integrating a new monocular camera system capable of identifying obstacles at intersections. Additionally, the existing stereo camera array has been upgraded; according to Toyota, the recognition range has effectively doubled, allowing for superior vehicle detection when utilizing adaptive cruise control.
Mechanical and Handling Tweaks
The core powertrain remains unchanged for 2027. The vehicle continues to be powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter flat-four engine producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Customers retain the choice between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual variant completes the 0-60 mph sprint in 6.1 seconds, while the automatic version does so in 6.6 seconds.
Despite the static output figures, engineers have focused on improving the driving feel:
- Throttle Calibration: Revised for a more linear and seamless power delivery.
- Shift Feel: The chamfer on the shifter interlock between the fourth and fifth gears has been widened by 0.02 inches to facilitate smoother, faster downshifts.
The optional Performance Package remains available, continuing to offer track-ready equipment such as high-performance Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers.
Market Availability
The 2027 Toyota GR86 is scheduled to reach dealership showrooms this summer. The model will be offered in both base and Premium trim levels, with official pricing expected to be disclosed closer to the vehicle's retail debut.
