Slate Auto, the startup that garnered significant online interest last year with its stripped-down electric pickup, is reaching a pivotal moment. The company has announced that it will soon open preorders for the vehicle and, more importantly, reveal its official pricing. This information is highly anticipated, as the company has positioned the truck as a low-cost entry point into the electric vehicle market.

Preorder Details and Delivery Expectations

According to information reported by InsideEVs, the preorder window officially opens on June 24. The process for securing a vehicle varies based on previous interest:

  • Existing reservation holders: Those who previously placed a $50 refundable deposit will receive priority access. To confirm their order, they must submit a $250 non-refundable deposit and select a delivery window within 30 days.
  • New customers: Shoppers who did not make an initial reservation can still place a preorder starting June 24. These buyers will be required to pay a $300 non-refundable fee, though their estimated delivery dates will likely be later than those of initial reservation holders.

Slate anticipates sending out invitations to configure vehicles—including selecting wraps, choosing accessories, and finalizing financing—starting in late 2026.

Pricing and Market Positioning

While Slate had previously suggested a starting price of under $20,000, that estimate relied on the availability of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, which is no longer applicable to this model. Industry analysts suggest the final entry price will likely be closer to $25,000. If the startup succeeds in keeping the cost at this level, it could significantly lower the barrier to entry for many consumers.

A Focus on Minimalism

The vehicle’s affordability is achieved through a deliberate "stripped-back" design. The entry-level model, dubbed the "Blank Slate," features:
