A Shift in Crime Statistics

For any rider, the discovery of a stolen motorcycle is a deeply unsettling experience. However, recent data offers a glimmer of hope: motorcycle theft is trending downward. Following a surge in criminal activity across the U.S. during the post-pandemic era, the number of incidents has begun to wane. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), thefts reached approximately 54,736 in 2022, but that figure dropped to an estimated 44,564 by 2025.


Broader crime reports from the FBI support this trend, noting a 9.3% decrease in violent crimes and a 12.3% decline in property crimes between the spring of 2025 and 2026. Specifically, motor vehicle theft saw a significant drop of 21.6% during that same period.


The Challenge of Recovery

Despite the decline in overall theft, a major concern persists: roughly 63% of stolen motorcycles are never recovered. This is partly due to the nature of powersports ownership. Unlike daily commuters, motorcycles are often stored for long periods, meaning an owner might not realize their bike is missing for days or even weeks. As noted by the NICB, recovery probability is highest when a theft is reported immediately.


«Recreational vehicles are often valuable, easily portable, and stored in locations that make them attractive targets for thieves,» stated David J. Glawe, president and CEO of the NICB.

In contrast to motorcycles, approximately 45% of stolen passenger cars are recovered within 48 hours, and over 85% are eventually found. The disparity exists because motorcycles are compact, maneuverable, and can be easily hidden in private garages or disassembled for parts before law enforcement can intervene.


How to Protect Your Ride

Because theft is frequently a crime of opportunity, adding layers of security can significantly deter criminals. To safeguard your motorcycle, consider the following measures:

  • Physical Barriers: Use heavy-duty chains and rotor locks to immobilize the wheels.
  • Storage: Whenever possible, park inside a locked garage or a gated area.
  • Technology: Utilize built-in immobilizers, alarms, and GPS trackers.
  • Visibility: Keep your bike out of sight to ensure it doesn't become a target in the first place.

If you discover that your motorcycle has been stolen, prompt action is critical. Filing a police report within minutes of the discovery significantly improves the chances of recovery. While losing a vehicle is frustrating, it is important to remember that property can be replaced through insurance, and the priority remains personal safety.
