Beyond the Legends: Underappreciated JDM Engines
It is widely acknowledged that Japanese manufacturers have consistently produced some of the world's most reliable and high-performing automotive engines. Enthusiasts globally often default to icons such as the Toyota 2JZ-GTE, Nissan RB26DETT, and the Mazda 13B. However, the legacy of Japanese engineering extends far beyond these famous units. Many remarkable engines were either overshadowed by their predecessors or limited to the Japanese domestic market (JDM), yet they possess performance capabilities that rival more celebrated counterparts.
1. Toyota 7M-GTE
Serving as the precursor to the legendary JZ series, the 7M-GTE debuted in the 1987 Supra Turbo. This 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six utilized a CT26 turbocharger to produce 232 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque. Featuring an intercooler and an upgraded ignition system, it provided competitive performance for its era, powering both the A70 Supra and the JDM-exclusive second-generation Toyota Soarer.
2. Nissan VH45DE
In the late 1980s, Nissan introduced the VH45DE to challenge Toyota’s dominance in the luxury V8 segment. This 4.5-liter, all-aluminum V8 featured a forged crankshaft and connecting rods. While officially rated at 277 horsepower due to the industry's "Gentlemen's Agreement," real-world estimates suggest it was capable of producing upwards of 300 horsepower. It was primarily found in the Infiniti Q45 and the Nissan President.
3. Mazda 20B-REW
The 20B-REW remains a rare masterpiece of rotary engineering. As the only three-rotor engine ever produced by Mazda for road use, it was exclusively featured in the Eunos Cosmo from 1990 to 1995. Utilizing a sophisticated sequential-turbo system, it delivered 276 horsepower and 296 lb-ft of torque, though many experts believe its true output was significantly higher.
4. Nissan S20
Before the dominance of the RB series, the S20 engine defined the early GT-R. Derived from racecar technology developed by Prince, the 2.0-liter straight-six powered the first Skyline GT-R (PGC10) in 1969. With its four-valve-per-cylinder design and specialized components, it produced 160 horsepower—an exceptional figure for a Japanese road car at the time.
5. Nissan VG30DETT
Often flying under the radar compared to other 90s giants, the VG30DETT was a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that powered the Z32-chassis 300ZX. This engine was a technological milestone, utilizing a configuration that would eventually become the industry standard for modern performance cars. In its turbo form, it pushed the 300ZX into the low 5-second range for 0-60 mph sprints.
6. Toyota 3S-GE (Black Top)
The 3S-GE evolved through five generations of refinement. The final iteration, the "Black Top" introduced in 1998, is particularly notable for achieving over 100 horsepower per liter naturally aspirated. Found in the Toyota Altezza, this 2.0-liter powerhouse proved that high output did not strictly require forced induction.
7. Nissan VK45DE
The VK45DE was a 4.5-liter, 32-valve V8 that succeeded the VH series in luxury applications like the Infiniti Q45 and M45. Delivering up to 340 horsepower, the engine was highly regarded for its robust torque. Its capabilities were so significant that the NISMO division adapted it for high-performance use, including the Super GT series and LMP2 racing programs, where it proved its reliability and power in demanding competitive environments.
