A Shift in Battery Strategy
It is common practice for automakers to adjust specifications when transitioning from a prototype to a production vehicle. The all-electric Slate truck recently underwent such a change, notably replacing its original battery chemistry plans. During its initial reveal in April 2025, the manufacturer showcased a model featuring nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries, offering two options: a 52.7-kWh pack with a 150-mile range and an 84.3-kWh variant providing 240 miles of range.
However, with the announcement of the production version's pricing—starting at $24,950—the company revealed a complete departure from the previous setup. The vehicle now exclusively utilizes a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery system with a 65-kWh capacity, rated for a 205-mile range.
The Reasoning Behind the Switch
The move to LFP was not the original plan. Initially, the manufacturer prioritized NMC chemistry to ensure the vehicle would meet the requirements for national EV tax credits. Since LFP batteries are frequently sourced from Chinese manufacturers, they were previously excluded from these incentives. By selecting South Korean-made NMC units for the prototype, the company aimed to maintain eligibility for tax benefits. Despite the loss of these credits, the Slate remains an affordable entry in the electric truck market.
Benefits and Drawbacks of LFP Technology
The transition to LFP chemistry brings several functional advantages, including:
- Enhanced Safety: LFP batteries demonstrate superior thermal stability, significantly reducing the risk of thermal runaway and battery fires.
- Heat Resistance: These packs handle extreme temperatures more effectively during everyday operation.
- Longevity: LFP batteries are renowned for their durability, capable of enduring thousands of charge cycles without substantial degradation.
However, this shift also introduces specific limitations. LFP batteries generally possess lower energy density compared to NMC alternatives, meaning they are heavier and bulkier for the same power output. Due to these size constraints, the 65-kWh LFP pack occupies the entire dedicated battery compartment of the Slate platform, eliminating the possibility of offering a higher-capacity or longer-range battery option. Whether a 205-mile range will satisfy the needs of the average consumer remains a subject of ongoing industry debate.
