Evolution of the Flagship
Following its 2021 debut as the "Seven" concept, Hyundai has officially launched its new three-row electric SUV as the Ioniq 9. Positioned as the crowning achievement of the brand’s electric "chess piece" design philosophy, the Ioniq 9 serves as the flagship for Hyundai, mirroring the market positioning of its corporate sibling, the Kia EV9.
Distinctive Aerodynamic Design
The Ioniq 9 stands out with a unique aesthetic that blends SUV, estate, and MPV elements. Its design is more than just visual flair; the vehicle features a sculpted underbody, active air shutters, and a rear profile optimized for airflow. These efforts result in an impressive drag coefficient of 0.26, allowing it to outperform several smaller electric vehicles in wind resistance despite its massive footprint.
Interior Comfort and Utility
Inside, the Ioniq 9 prioritizes passenger space and functionality. The cabin feels expansive, featuring high-quality materials, physical controls, and a practical infotainment interface. Notably, in the top-tier Calligraphy trim, the second-row seats can swivel 180 degrees to create a lounge-like environment. The vehicle also boasts significant cargo capacity: with all seats folded, it offers a massive 2,419 liters of space. Unique to this class, the third row even includes Isofix points for child seats.
Powertrain and Performance
All variants are equipped with a substantial 110.3kWh battery pack. Buyers can choose between three configurations:
- Entry-level: Single-motor RWD with 215bhp.
- AWD variant: Dual-motor setup delivering 303bhp.
- Performance AWD: Dual-motor configuration producing 422bhp.
Built on the 800V E-GMP platform, the vehicle supports rapid charging up to 233kW, ensuring shorter wait times at power stations. While the ride is soft and comfortable—though lacking the sophisticated air suspension found in some premium European alternatives—the Ioniq 9 provides a refined driving experience tailored for families rather than sport-focused performance.
Market Position and Efficiency
While the Ioniq 9 is incredibly spacious, its size does impact energy efficiency. Real-world testing shows that the vehicle requires significant power to move its weight. However, with a starting price considerably lower than luxury alternatives like the Volvo EX90, the Ioniq 9 offers a compelling value proposition. It bridges the gap between mainstream family haulers and high-end luxury SUVs, making it a strong contender for those who require three rows of seating without paying premium luxury tax.
