A New Champion at the Green Hell
The Nürburgring, famously dubbed the "Green Hell," remains the ultimate benchmark for automotive performance. For decades, manufacturers have utilized this grueling German circuit to push engineering boundaries and establish bragging rights. Previously, the Audi RS Q8 Performance held the title for the fastest SUV lap, with driver Frank Stippler recording a time of 7 minutes and 36.698 seconds in June 2024, powered by its 631-hp 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.
However, that record has been eclipsed. Xiaomi’s upcoming electric SUV, the YU7 GT, has shattered the previous benchmark by nearly two seconds, proving that the tech giant is a serious contender in the high-performance automotive space.
Record-Breaking Performance
According to reports, the YU7 GT completed the 20.832-kilometer track in 7 minutes and 34.93 seconds. The vehicle was piloted by test driver Ren Zhoucan, who achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Chinese driver to set an official record at the circuit. It is important to note that the vehicle used for this attempt was modified for track conditions, featuring a roll cage and the removal of rear seats to optimize weight.
Further details regarding the record-breaking model, including the specifics of an optional "Track Package," are expected to be unveiled during the car's official launch on May 21. Although the lap was completed on April 2, the company strategically timed the announcement to coincide with the model's debut.
Technical Specifications and Expectations
Based on filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the production version of the YU7 is expected to be a powerhouse. Key technical highlights include:
- Drivetrain: A dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivering a staggering 990 horsepower.
- Battery and Range: A 101.7-kWh battery pack, offering a range of approximately 438 miles (705 kilometers) under the CLTC cycle.
- Top Speed: Speculation suggests the SUV may reach 186 mph (300 km/h), potentially making it the fastest SUV globally.
During its Nürburgring run, the YU7 GT was clocked at GPS-verified speeds of up to 185.7 mph (299 km/h) on the track's long straight, suggesting these performance targets are well within reach.
Xiaomi’s Growing Track Pedigree
This achievement follows Xiaomi’s previous successes on the track. The brand has already demonstrated its prowess with the SU7 Ultra. The company’s focus on high-speed electric mobility is evident, as reflected in its previous testing results:
«The SU7 Ultra prototype previously clocked an impressive 6 minutes and 22.09 seconds at the Nürburgring, showcasing the manufacturer's ability to compete with established supercar brands.»
With acceleration figures reaching 60 mph in 2.78 seconds, Xiaomi is quickly transitioning from a consumer electronics powerhouse into a dominant force in the electric vehicle industry.
