First US Appearance of the Stretched Model Y

Tesla’s elongated Model Y L has been spotted on American soil for the first time, offering a glimpse into the automaker's strategy for the U.S. market. The three-row electric SUV, which was originally developed specifically for China, was filmed by the Out of Spec Reviews team at a Tesla charging location near Los Angeles.

During the preview, hosts Kyle and Alex explored the North American variant, which Tesla plans to manufacture at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. Notably, instead of a seven-seat arrangement, the company has opted for a six-seat interior design, featuring captain's chairs in the second row alongside a functional third row.

Performance and Specs

While official EPA range figures have yet to be finalized, early reports suggest that Tesla is targeting a range exceeding 325 miles. The vehicle is expected to hit the market later this year, with a projected launch window in October or November.

The updated model also introduces several technical improvements, including:

  • A maximum charging capacity of 250 kW.
  • An upgraded thermal management system.
  • A larger battery pack compared to many existing Model Y configurations.

Highlighting the vehicle's design, Kyle remarked:

«This is a true family vehicle.»

The Importance of Three-Row EVs

Space remains a significant factor for many consumers considering a transition to electric vehicles. For larger families or those managing carpools, the addition of a third row provides the necessary utility without requiring a jump to a substantially larger SUV frame.

By bringing the Model Y L to the U.S. production line, Tesla aims to address the demand for more spacious electric options. Beyond the convenience of extra seating, these vehicles continue to offer the standard benefits of EV ownership, including reduced maintenance requirements—due to fewer moving parts and no need for oil changes—and the elimination of tailpipe emissions, which contributes to cleaner air in urban environments.

Future Outlook

Tesla’s decision to integrate advanced cooling technology with local production in Texas suggests a focus on balancing efficiency with practicality. As the Model Y L prepares for its domestic debut, it positions itself as a potential catalyst for making electric family haulers a more common sight on American roads.
