Geely Establishes Presence in Canada
Geely Auto, headquartered in Hangzhou, China, has officially commenced its operations in Canada. The company announced on October 8 that it has assembled a local team to lead its expansion efforts, with plans to introduce its inaugural vehicle model to the Canadian market next year.
The company is currently focused on building a robust retail and service network. Bryan Wu, managing director of Geely Auto Canada, expressed the company's long-term vision in an official statement:
«Canada represents an important next step in Geely Auto's international growth. We are entering this market with a long-term commitment, bringing our global technology and engineering capabilities to Canadian drivers while building strong local partnerships and the support customers need to feel confident in choosing Geely.»
A Strategy of Global Expansion
The move into Canada is part of a broader international strategy for the automaker. During the first half of the year, Geely expanded its footprint significantly by entering seven European markets, such as Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and France. Globally, the company achieved strong results in 2025, selling more than 3 million vehicles across over 100 countries—a figure that includes approximately 1.7 million hybrid and fully electric new energy vehicles.
Navigating Trade and Regulatory Landscapes
Geely’s entry into Canada is facilitated by a trade agreement established in January. This deal provides a framework for importing Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles into Canada at a preferential tariff rate of 6.1%, as opposed to the higher 100% duty that had been previously implemented. The five-year agreement includes specific stipulations, such as a requirement that half of the imported vehicles must be budget-friendly models priced at CA$35,000 or lower.
This development stands in notable contrast to the regulatory environment in the United States, where high tariffs on Chinese-made EVs remain in place to protect domestic automotive interests. Meanwhile, Geely continues to diversify its global operations. In addition to its own brand expansion, the company maintains a majority stake in the Swedish EV manufacturer Polestar and has recently entered a joint venture with Ford Motor Co. to utilize the latter's production facilities in Valencia, Spain, for future vehicle manufacturing.
Geely Auto Canada has indicated that further specifics regarding its initial product lineup, service locations, and pricing structures will be revealed as the company nears its formal commercial launch in 2026.
