A Fresh Direction for Ford in Europe
Ford is setting ambitious goals for the European market, planning to introduce five new vehicle models within the next four years. This strategy aims to recapture the company's past dominance in the UK and mainland Europe, with a specific focus on the highly competitive B and C segments, which currently represent roughly 80% of regional sales. The upcoming lineup will consist of vehicles ranging from 4.0 to 4.65 meters in length.
The New Product Lineup
The company’s renewed approach centers on a mix of electrification and strategic partnerships. Key planned models include:
- The Bronco-inspired SUV: A multi-energy compact SUV based on the global Bronco brand, slated for production at Ford's Valencia plant starting in 2028.
- Electric Compacts: An electric hatchback and a crossover, expected to arrive in 2028, developed in collaboration with Renault using the RGMP Small platform.
- Rally-bred Crossovers: Two additional plug-in hybrid crossovers expected before the end of 2029, potentially developed in partnership with Geely.
While speculation continues regarding the revival of the iconic Fiesta name for the new electric hatchback, Ford leadership has stated that no final decision has been reached, though they acknowledge the significant heritage associated with such classic models.
Commitment to Driving Dynamics
Despite utilizing third-party platforms, Ford executives, including Europe passenger vehicle boss Christian Weingärtner, have emphasized that these vehicles will be distinctly "Ford." The brand intends to lean into its "rally-bred" heritage to ensure superior driving dynamics that differentiate its products from competitors.
«We can't just have that as a marketing slogan. It needs to be injected into the core technical elements of the vehicle,» noted Weingärtner. He explained that by focusing on tunable elements like dampers and suspension, Ford will ensure that the driving experience remains authentic to the brand, regardless of the underlying EV architecture.
Broadening the Commercial and Specialty Portfolio
Beyond the passenger car sector, Ford Pro continues to serve as a vital pillar of the company's profitability. The division is expanding its reach with the new electric Transit City van, developed with JMC, and the introduction of a new Super Duty variant of the Ranger pick-up. This heavy-duty truck is engineered for specialized sectors, including military, emergency services, and mining, featuring enhanced suspension and towing capabilities up to 4.5 tonnes.
