The Nissan Frontier is often praised for reliability online, but many sources give vague statements that cover the entire model line. Consumer Reports provides detailed yearly data, showing that broad claims about the truck's quality are not accurate.
According to CR, the first year after a redesign is typically the least reliable, while the last year is the most reliable. This pattern is seen in the Frontier: reliability dropped sharply between 2019 and 2020 after a new powertrain was introduced, then improved after the 2021 redesign.
In 2019, the second-generation Frontier topped its segment for reliability. However, the 2020 model saw a major decline, with two recalls for powertrain issues. The 2021 and 2022 versions continued to struggle, facing multiple recalls and poor scores in areas like electronics and body hardware.
The 2023 model marked a recovery, with only one recall and better scores. By 2024, the Frontier reached the top of its segment for reliability, earning a CR recommendation for the first time since 2019. It achieved perfect scores in 14 out of 17 trouble spots.
Reliability slipped slightly for 2025 and 2026 models, but they retained the CR recommendation. Despite recalls, the last three model years align with the Frontier's overall positive reputation, though CR's historical data shows how complex that reputation truly is.
