Setting New Standards in Efficiency
Audi has officially pulled the wraps off the A2 e-tron, an all-electric compact vehicle that the manufacturer identifies as its most efficient creation to date. With a starting price of €38,200 ($44,364) for the German market, the model aims to combine accessibility with high-performance electric engineering.
The vehicle demonstrates remarkable energy management, featuring a WLTP energy consumption rating of 12.8kWh per 100km. Drivers can expect an impressive WLTP-rated range reaching up to 646km on a single charge.
Performance and Powertrain Versatility
The A2 e-tron utilizes rear-wheel-drive architecture powered by permanently excited synchronous motors. Depending on the configuration, customers can choose from four power levels:
- Output ranges from 125kW (350 Nm) up to 240kW (545 Nm).
- Battery capacities are available in 52kWh, 61kWh, and 84kWh (gross) options.
Furthermore, the car supports bidirectional charging. This includes vehicle-to-load capabilities, with extended vehicle-to-home functionality currently available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland when paired with compatible DC wall boxes.
Advanced Manufacturing at Ingolstadt
The production of the A2 e-tron is centered at Audi’s Ingolstadt plant. The facility has integrated approximately 1,200 existing parts and 250 repurposed robots to streamline the assembly line. The factory has also implemented the “pearl chain” manufacturing principle—a fixed-order production system previously successful at the Neckarsulm site.
Audi noted that the development process was significantly optimized, allowing the A2 e-tron to reach the market 21 months earlier than previous comparable models.
Interior Technology and Design
The cabin is designed with a focus on digital integration, featuring:
- An 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus.
- A 12.8-inch curved MMI touch display.
- An optional 1.6m² panoramic glass roof.
Standard safety and assistance systems include emergency brake assist, adaptive cruise control, evasive assist, parking system plus, and a rearview camera.
Market Strategy and Corporate Context
During the unveiling in Paris, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner emphasized the vehicle's specific design intent: “A2 e-tron makes e-mobility easier, more efficient and more convincing for everyday life. We developed the A2 e-tron with a clear focus on Europe – on the way people live, drive and use their cars here. It's designed to meet the needs of European customers – developed in Germany, and built in Ingolstadt.”
Ordering for the new model is scheduled to begin on September 10, 2026, with the first deliveries expected in December 2026. The launch takes place amidst a significant period of transition for the parent company, Volkswagen Group, which is currently executing a restructuring plan that includes substantial workforce reductions reaching up to 100,000 positions by 2030.
