Simplified Charging for Volvo EV Drivers
Volvo is streamlining the electric vehicle experience for owners of its latest SUVs, the EX90 and the upcoming EX60. The automaker has officially introduced "Plug & Charge" functionality in the United States, a feature designed to remove the friction often associated with public charging.
Previously, drivers frequently had to manage various mobile applications or handle physical credit cards to initiate a charging session. With this update, the vehicle now communicates directly with the charging station. Once the initial payment details are configured during the vehicle setup, the charging process begins automatically as soon as the cable is connected.
Expanded Network and Availability
This convenience will be available at more than 35,000 fast-charging locations across the U.S. This extensive network includes major providers such as the Tesla Supercharger network and the Ionna charging infrastructure, with plans to integrate additional partners in the near future.
For those who have already taken delivery of the EX90, the feature is currently active. For the EX60, the functionality will be ready for drivers as soon as the first units are delivered to the U.S. market later this year.
Hardware Requirements for EX90 Owners
It is important for 2025 model year EX90 owners to note that the Plug & Charge feature requires specific hardware—the Nvidia Orin computer. While this chip comes pre-installed in the 2026 models, 2025 owners are eligible for a complimentary upgrade at authorized service centers to gain access to this technology.
Smart Navigation and High-Speed Performance
Volvo continues to integrate software solutions to ease range anxiety. Drivers can utilize the built-in Android Automotive operating system or the Volvo Cars app to locate compatible stations. Google Maps provides further assistance by automatically planning routes and suggesting optimal charging stops based on the vehicle’s current battery status.
The system is particularly beneficial for the EX60, which features an 800-volt architecture. This platform is engineered for rapid energy replenishment, capable of charging from 10% to 80% in approximately 19 minutes at high-capacity stations. As the industry shifts toward better reliability and user experience, Volvo’s move reflects a broader trend to ensure that charging an electric vehicle becomes as routine and effortless as refueling a traditional car.
