Armored vehicles serve as a cornerstone of contemporary combat operations, facilitating everything from frontline breakthroughs to the secure transport of personnel and logistics. Given the U.S. military's extensive history with these machines, it is inevitable that older models are eventually retired from active duty due to age or technological obsolescence.

Once these heavy assets are decommissioned, the government follows several established procedures to manage their disposal. A primary method involves transferring this equipment to international allies. This strategy not only strengthens geopolitical partnerships but also recoups value from assets no longer needed by domestic forces.

According to reports, some legacy armored personnel carriers from the Vietnam era have been repurposed in modern conflicts, such as in Ukraine, where they were successfully converted into armored ambulances to provide critical protection for the wounded.


Recycling and Training Applications

For vehicles that remain in U.S. custody but are no longer functional, the process is less glamorous. The Defense Logistics Agency often oversees the scrapping of irreparable units. However, before a vehicle is broken down for materials, it may serve a final purpose:

  • Live-fire training: Dilapidated tanks often function as stationary targets for combat simulations.
  • Strategic testing: They allow soldiers to experience battlefield scenarios using realistic hardware without risking damage to high-cost, operational equipment.

Can Civilians Own Retired Tanks?

While most people assume these vehicles belong strictly on a base, it is technically legal for civilians to acquire decommissioned military hardware under federal law. However, the process is far from simple.

«Owning a decommissioned tank is entirely legal on the federal level, though that's not to say it's easy,» industry experts note. To legally own such a vehicle, the owner must ensure it is fully "demilitarized," which entails the permanent disabling or removal of weapons systems. Furthermore, prospective owners must navigate a labyrinth of state and local regulations to determine if the vehicle can be legally operated on public roads.

The financial barrier to entry is also significant. Beyond the initial purchase price, which can easily reach hundreds of thousands of dollars, owners face substantial costs related to specialized maintenance, extensive regulatory paperwork, and the extreme fuel consumption inherent to such massive machines. Operating one on public streets requires proper licensure and significant modifications to meet safety standards.
