A routine commute for a San Francisco resident turned into a distressing situation when a Waymo autonomous vehicle disregarded clear warnings and entered an active construction area. Elliot Slade, who was riding with his fiancé on Highway 101, reported that the vehicle encountered road work and failed to navigate the situation safely.

Slade noted that despite the presence of physical barriers, the car bypassed safety measures. «There were signs. There were lights. There were cones,» Slade stated. «And it went through the cones and then sped up straight away.» The vehicle's decision to accelerate into a restricted zone sparked significant fear for the passengers, who had no way to override the autonomous system.

As the robotaxi continued its path through the restricted work zone, a California Highway Patrol vehicle spotted the autonomous car's erratic behavior and began following it. Slade described a tense atmosphere as officers attempted to signal the vehicle to halt. «Stop Waymo. Stop Waymo,» he recounted hearing from the officers, noting the helplessness he and his fiancé felt while trapped inside the moving vehicle.

The situation eventually concluded in a nearby residential area without any physical injuries. However, the experience has left the passenger questioning the current safety standards of autonomous technology, highlighting the dangers of having no manual override for passengers in emergency scenarios.


Ongoing Software Challenges and Recall

This incident arrives at a time when Waymo is already under scrutiny regarding its handling of complex road environments. Federal safety documents reveal that the company recently initiated a recall of approximately 3,900 vehicles. These measures were taken after reports surfaced in California and Arizona showing that robotaxis struggled to identify freeway closures and incorrectly prioritized road hazards.
