Dispelling the Battery Degradation Myth

For years, one of the primary concerns surrounding electric vehicle (EV) ownership has been the long-term health of the battery. Many potential buyers have feared that as vehicles accumulate mileage and age, their energy storage capacity would drop significantly. However, a major study conducted by the Swedish automotive marketplace, Carla, has provided data that effectively challenges these long-standing concerns.


The research spanned from 2022 to 2026, analyzing nearly 10,000 electric vehicles from prominent manufacturers including Tesla, BMW, and Audi. The primary goal was to monitor battery health over a four-year period, specifically examining capacity retention after the vehicles reached the 62,000-mile threshold.


Top Performers in Battery Health

The results of the testing were surprisingly positive. Rather than seeing drastic drops in performance, the vast majority of vehicles maintained excellent capacity. The Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona set the benchmark, both retaining an impressive 97% of their original capacity after 62,000 miles. Following closely behind was the Kia EV6, which secured the third spot with a retention rate of 95.95%.


The dominance of South Korean manufacturers in the top rankings is noteworthy, as they outperformed many established European brands. The top five list was completed by the Volvo XC40 Recharge (94.70%) and the Polestar 2 (94.35%), while the BMW i3 was the highest-ranking German vehicle, taking sixth place with 93.77% capacity.


Examining the Tesla Performance

While Tesla is often considered the industry leader, their vehicles did not dominate the top of the list in this specific study. Only one Tesla model, the 60.5kWh Model 3, cracked the top ten with 93.94% capacity retention. The 78.8kWh version of the Model 3 and the Model S followed in 12th and 13th places, respectively.


The Broader Outlook for EV Owners

Perhaps the most encouraging takeaway from the study is the high performance of even the lowest-ranked vehicles. The Volkswagen ID.3, which occupied the final spot in the analyzed group, still maintained 91.7% of its original capacity. This data suggests that the common narrative regarding rapid battery failure is largely outdated.


As the researchers noted, the findings demonstrate that battery technology has advanced significantly, ensuring that degradation is minimal for the average owner over the first four years of high-mileage driving.

Ultimately, this research should provide peace of mind to those hesitant about transitioning to electric mobility, as the data indicates that current EV batteries are far more durable than previously assumed.
