Ford Motor Company has unveiled a more efficient method for F-150 Lightning and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid owners to utilize their vehicles as a reliable source of backup electricity. By introducing a streamlined vehicle-to-home setup, the automaker aims to eliminate the need for complicated extension cord configurations and expensive home electrical modifications.


How the Technology Works

The solution centers on a device called GenerLink, a compact transfer switch manufactured by Global Power Products. This unit is designed for installation directly at or near a home's utility meter. According to information provided by Ford, the system functions as follows:

  • Owners connect the truck’s 240-volt Pro Power Onboard outlet to the meter-mounted device.
  • Power is then directed straight into the home’s main electrical panel.
  • This bypasses the need to power appliances individually during a grid failure.

The total cost for the required equipment, including the specialized 12-inch Vehicle Connector, is approximately $1,100. Installation costs generally range from $250 to $450 in regions where direct meter installation is permitted, though configurations requiring meter-adjacent setups can reach up to $1,500.

As extreme weather events—such as wildfires, heatwaves, and severe storms—become more frequent, energy independence is increasingly vital for homeowners. Having a simple way to tap into an electric vehicle's battery allows households to maintain essential services, keep communication devices active, and power lighting during emergency outages.

Ford emphasizes the convenience of this upgrade: «Instead of running cords through cracked windows and doors, you can now run a single connection between your truck's 240V Pro Power Onboard outlet and a GenerLink transfer switch installed at or near your utility meter.»

Depending on individual household energy consumption, Ford estimates that a properly equipped truck can provide power for an average home for up to five days.
