A Compact Alternative to Oversized SUVs

Miami-based startup Chip Motors has officially emerged from stealth mode, introducing a compact, doorless electric vehicle (EV) that offers a uniquely American alternative to the massive SUVs currently dominating the market. The low-speed vehicle is designed for neighborhood travel, with a top speed of 25 mph and future plans to incorporate remote-controlled parking.

Vehicle Features and Specifications

According to information provided by Chip Motors, the company has officially opened preorders for its inaugural model, the "Chip." The vehicle features a boxy aesthetic, a four-seat layout, and an accessible starting price of $15,000. Deliveries are currently scheduled to begin in Florida in 2027.

Designed for local travel, the vehicle is built for areas where golf carts have become a staple of daily transportation. Co-founder Jameson Detweiler explained the market shift, noting: «During the pandemic, something happened. The golf carts escaped the golf communities, and were adopted widely and rapidly by families in markets where you could have the doors off basically year round, or in seasonal markets too.»

  • Range and Power: Equipped with an approximately 15-kWh battery, the vehicle is expected to offer a range of around 100 miles.
  • Customization: Buyers will have the option to add features such as custom paint, alternative door styles, and even surfboard racks.
  • Expansion: A larger, six-seat version is currently in development with a starting price of $18,000.

Introducing "Chip Go!"

A key innovation for the company is the "Chip Go!" feature. This system is designed to allow drivers to exit the vehicle at their destination, such as a beach or retail store, and have the car autonomously maneuver to a parking space via remote human operation. Initially, this service will be limited to unoccupied vehicles, with Chip Motors assuming liability for any incidents during remote operation.

Redefining Neighborhood Transit

For many Americans, the vast majority of daily driving consists of short errands that do not require a heavy, fuel-dependent vehicle. By utilizing a smaller, purpose-built EV, drivers can significantly reduce fuel costs and minimize the environmental impact of tailpipe emissions. Furthermore, because electric vehicles contain fewer moving parts than internal combustion engines, they require less routine maintenance.

Detweiler envisions the Chip as more than just a car; he sees it as the next evolution of personal robotics. «I want this to be the first mass market American robot,» he stated. «It's just going to be on four wheels and sitting in your garage or in your driveway, as opposed to, you know, in your kitchen on two legs.»

As the company prepares for its Florida rollout, it is actively collaborating with state and local officials to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. While the company has long-term goals for Level 4 autonomy, the immediate focus remains on providing a reliable, road-ready vehicle for local communities.
