"It's about as close to motorcycling as I will ever come," says Daniel Goodison of his Caterham Seven Superlight R. This 220bhp road and track car weighs just 485kg, with no side windows or windscreen. It accelerates from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds.

Daniel bought the car two years ago and has since added 10,000 miles to its clock, using it for long journeys and track days despite basic amenities. "The headlights are like candles," he admits, but that doesn't deter him. The 1.8-litre Rover K-series engine has been tuned for high performance.

The car, number 127 of 127 built, was originally a kit car assembled by a weight-obsessed owner. Daniel uses it for sprints and hillclimbs at circuits like Goodwood and Gurston Down. He notes the lack of a roof means rain comes in during corners, and the ride is loud but bearable on long trips.

Despite minor issues like a rear axle needing replacement, the Caterham has been reliable. Daniel even removes the steering wheel when parked, as required by his insurance, adding to the ritual of each drive.
