Filling the Electric Void

While the market has seen small electric hot hatches like the Alpine A290 and larger, performance-oriented models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, there has been a glaring absence of vehicles in the segment traditionally occupied by the Volkswagen Golf GTI. First Impressions from the Prototype

Our initial encounter with the EV4 GT took place during a secretive prototype test session. Unlike standard media events, this was a raw experience with an early test mule. Without the usual accompaniment of engineers or marketing slideshows, we were given a rare opportunity to assess the vehicle's true character. The development focus for this model seems centered on correcting the historical gap between Kia’s aesthetic appeal and its dynamic driving engagement.


Performance and Handling Dynamics

The Kia EV4 GT adopts a personality that leans closer to the Volkswagen Golf R than the GTI. This is largely due to its all-wheel-drive configuration, which adds a 94bhp motor to the rear axle to complement the standard 194bhp front motor. The driving experience is significantly enhanced by a complete suspension overhaul. As noted during our test drive:

The car utilizes a sophisticated camera-based system that scans the road surface, allowing the suspension to adjust in milliseconds to compensate for irregularities. Interior and Tech

Inside, the cabin receives meaningful upgrades that elevate it beyond the standard EV4. The highlight is the set of new sports seats, which provide a lower, more focused driving position wrapped in premium Alcantara and leather. The car also features the virtual gearshift technology popularized by the Ioniq 5 N, and a dedicated 'GT' mode on the steering wheel allows drivers to sharpen the vehicle's responses instantly.


A Promising Future

The EV4 GT demonstrates that electric platforms can successfully replicate the joy of a traditional hot hatch when tuned correctly. While competitors like the Honda Civic Type R may offer a different kind of engagement, the EV4 GT proves that the family hot hatch segment has a viable and exciting future in the electric era. With an estimated 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds and a well-sorted chassis, Kia appears to have created a compelling package for driving enthusiasts.
