Electric Vehicles Lead in Consumer Satisfaction
According to the most recent APEAL study conducted by J.D. Power, owners of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are expressing significantly higher levels of enthusiasm for their cars than those driving traditional gas-powered vehicles. Data shows that BEVs have achieved the most substantial growth in owner affinity metrics over the past year.
"While overall APEAL index scores improved across every powertrain type this year, BEVs saw the largest year-over-year increase (+22 points)," reported J.D. Power. "BEVs outperform internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in nearly every category in APEAL, with the biggest advantage in powertrain satisfaction (+109 points)."
Understanding the APEAL Methodology
It is important to distinguish the APEAL (Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout) study from other industry metrics. While reports like the Initial Quality Study (IQS) focus strictly on mechanical defects, malfunctions, or design flaws during the first 90 days of ownership, the APEAL study takes a more subjective approach.
As defined by the organization, the study focuses on the emotional connection between a driver and their vehicle. It evaluates:
- The level of excitement a new vehicle generates.
- Emotional attachment to the vehicle's design and features.
- Overall satisfaction with the daily experience of living with and driving the car.
What Drives Owner Sentiment?
Now in its 31st year, the study surveys owners after 90 days of vehicle ownership to gauge their sentiment across 37 different attributes. These range from the physical comfort experienced upon entering the cabin to the thrill of acceleration.
«The APEAL dataset allows automakers to immediately identify the specific features, driving characteristics and styling cues that are resonating most and helping to drive brand loyalty among new-vehicle buyers,» notes J.D. Power.
Study Scope and Data
The 2026 US APEAL Study is highly comprehensive, gathering feedback from 78,514 owners of new 2026 model-year vehicles. The research period spanned from June 2025 through May 2026, analyzing vehicles registered between March 2025 and February 2026. The findings indicate that for drivers currently on the road, the electric vehicle experience is proving to be a clear winner in terms of overall owner happiness.
