Safety Concerns Regarding Rear Differential
Ford has officially initiated a safety recall involving certain Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles produced between 2021 and 2023. The recall specifically targets models configured with rear-wheel drive, citing a mechanical flaw discovered within the final drive assembly.
Documentation submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that the rear differential pinion shaft is susceptible to bending fatigue. Such a failure could lead to the shaft snapping, causing an abrupt loss of power to the wheels. Furthermore, if the shaft fractures, the transmission's locking mechanism may fail, preventing the vehicle from shifting into "Park." This situation presents a significant risk of the vehicle rolling away unless the electronic parking brake is actively engaged.
Scope of the Recall and Reported Issues
According to production data, the compromised components were installed in vehicles assembled from February 27, 2021, through August 21, 2025. As of June 11, 2026, Ford has documented 62 warranty claims and 14 quality reports linked to this specific mechanical defect. Fortunately, the automaker reports that there have been no injuries or accidents associated with this issue.
Remediation Plan for Owners
To rectify the problem, authorized Ford dealerships will inspect the rear drive unit and install a redesigned rear differential assembly, which includes a more robust and reinforced pinion shaft. The company plans to notify impacted vehicle owners via mail regarding the potential safety risk between July 13 and July 20, 2026.
As the necessary replacement components are currently being prepared, Ford expects the full recall campaign to be implemented by late December 2026. Owners will receive a follow-up notification once the required parts are fully available at local service centers.
