For numerous electric vehicle owners, the primary issue is not merely locating a charging station, but finding the appropriate type of infrastructure for their specific destination. A growing debate has emerged regarding why malls and other entertainment venues predominantly install Level 3 fast chargers, which frequently carry steep idle fees.
Drivers argue that when visiting a cinema, restaurant, or shopping center for several hours, super-fast chargers become a significant inconvenience. These setups essentially mandate that owners rush back to their vehicles to avoid penalties, transforming a leisurely outing into a stressful race against the clock.

Seeking the Right Balance
The consensus among many drivers is not a rejection of fast charging, but a call for more strategic deployment. High-speed chargers are widely considered ideal for highway rest stops and convenience stores where turnover is high. Conversely, locations where people spend extended periods are viewed as better suited for Level 2 stations or slower DC fast chargers.
The community has proposed several solutions to improve the public charging experience:
- Increased Diversity: Installing a mix of slow and fast chargers within the same facility to accommodate different stay durations.
- Pricing Efficiency: Drivers have noted that lower-power DC chargers are often more cost-effective, sometimes saving up to 10 cents per kWh compared to ultra-fast units.
- Strategic Infrastructure: Expanding Level 1 and Level 2 access in office buildings, apartment complexes, and hotels to allow for charging while the vehicle is parked for long periods anyway.
A Shift in Infrastructure Strategy
Some observers have pointed to successful models in Europe and China, where destination charging with lower-power options is more prevalent. There are also indications that major networks, such as EVgo and ChargePoint, may be gradually shifting their focus toward broader Level 2 deployments.
By prioritizing medium-speed chargers in places where people typically spend one to two hours, providers could distribute charging access across a greater number of parking spaces. This approach would move away from the current model, which often concentrates power in a limited number of expensive, high-speed stalls that require constant monitoring by the user.
