The Rise of DIY Off-Road Electrification

While the automotive industry has embraced electrification at a rapid pace, the world of off-road utility vehicles and recreational ATVs is transitioning much more slowly. With limited factory-made options available, many enthusiasts are turning to DIY projects to bring modern battery technology to the trails.


A notable example comes from YouTuber RMS Builds, who previously successfully electrified a Yamaha RC450. Building on that experience, the creator set out to transform a 2006 Honda Rancher. The choice of donor vehicle was deliberate: the Rancher’s shaft drive system was selected to maximize silence, aiming to avoid the noisy chain-drive issues encountered in the previous project.


Engineering the Electric Conversion

The conversion process involved significant mechanical adaptation to replace the traditional internal combustion engine. Key components of the build include:

  • Powertrain: A 10-kilowatt (13.4-horsepower) electric motor serves as the heart of the machine.
  • Energy Storage: The system is powered by a 6.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack.
  • Electronics: The controller and related electrical hardware are mounted on a custom plate secured to the primary motor mount.

Integrating the new hardware required precision engineering. While the frame remained largely intact due to the compact nature of the motor, the builder had to perform extensive machining to align the motor's output shaft with the universal joint connected to the rear differential.


Performance and Real-World Results

The final result is a surprisingly lightweight machine. According to the builder, the electric Honda Rancher tips the scales at 487 pounds, making it approximately 10 pounds lighter than the lightest factory-stock gasoline model. Regarding performance, the builder estimates a range of about 35 miles under standard riding conditions.


Although the custom build did not outperform a stock gasoline Rancher in head-to-head acceleration tests, the primary objective—noise reduction—was a resounding success.


«The real goal was to make a quieter ATV, and combining electric power with the Rancher's shaft drive definitely did the trick,» the builder noted.

By eliminating the internal combustion engine and utilizing a shaft drive, the builder successfully removed the harsh rattling sounds associated with chain drives. While the motor produces a faint whine, the overall experience is significantly quieter than a traditional gas-powered quad. The absence of engine idling noise provides a more peaceful way to experience remote wilderness areas, highlighting the clear benefits of electric propulsion for off-road enthusiasts.
