Software Patch Issued for Entire Zoox Fleet
Zoox, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Amazon, has initiated a voluntary recall of its entire fleet of 105 robotaxis. The action comes in response to an incident where one of its vehicles became disoriented while driving through thick smoke near an active emergency site. The company is deploying a software update designed to refine how its vehicles identify and navigate around emergency zones.
According to a statement provided by the company, the patch
“enhances the existing capability of detecting active emergency scenes by adding the ability to detect and respond to heavy smoke in certain situations.”
Details of the Las Vegas Incident
Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) clarify that the event occurred on June 20 in Las Vegas, where Zoox currently operates a public shuttle service. The robotaxi, which was unoccupied at the time, encountered a cloud of heavy smoke that obscured a fire emergency not yet marked by traffic cones. The vehicle responded by braking sharply and attempting to maneuver away before coming to a full stop. A remote operator eventually intervened, manually reversing the vehicle to clear the path for emergency crews.
Broader Industry Challenges with Emergency Services
This incident is part of a growing trend of autonomous vehicles causing complications for emergency responders. Similar challenges have been documented across the industry, including:

These persistent issues have drawn criticism from the NHTSA. Administrator Jonathan Morrison issued a formal warning to the sector, labeling the interference with first responders as “unacceptable.” He emphasized that such scenarios cannot be dismissed as rare edge cases, stating: “To state it bluntly: an AV that cannot safely interact with first responders is a danger to the general public.”
